How KV Cache Store Cuts LLM Costs by Reusing What You Already Sent

September 4, 2026

Most teams spend too much on LLM inference because they recompute the same context over and over. If you repeatedly send long documents, codebase chunks, or conversation history through a model, a large share of the work is identical every time. KV Cache Store attacks that exact inefficiency: pre-compute the key-value cache once, store it, and reuse it across prompts.

What a KV cache actually buys you

Transformer inference is split into two phases. The prefill phase reads the full prompt and builds the key-value matrices that represent attention context. The decode phase generates one token at a time, reusing those matrices. Prefill is where long context gets expensive, especially when the same documents or system prompts are sent again and again.

By caching the KV state of a fixed context, you skip the prefill phase on every subsequent request that includes that context. The savings are not marginal. For long-codebase queries, legal document review, or repeated multi-shot prompts, the cached path can be an order of magnitude cheaper and faster than starting from raw text every time.

The KV Cache Store approach

KV Cache Store is a standalone product that we operate and contribute to. It gives you a CLI for caching context on files and an optional online storage service that keeps the cached state available across sessions, machines, and team members. The workflow is intentionally simple:

  • →Point the CLI at a file or directory you reference repeatedly.
  • →The tool pre-computes and stores the KV cache for that content.
  • →Future prompts that include the same context load the cached state instead of re-running the prefill.

Local storage keeps you in control. The optional cloud service adds synchronization across a team or CI fleet, so the same cache can be reused by every developer and every production job. Either way, the hard compute is done once.

Where it matters most

The biggest wins show up anywhere context is stable and requests are frequent. Code review agents that read the same repo repeatedly. Legal or medical document pipelines that query the same clauses. Customer-support RAG systems that hit the same knowledge base. Evaluation harnesses that run the same prompt set hundreds of times. In each case, prefill dominates cost, and caching it changes the economics.

A piece of the broader cost puzzle

KV caching is not a substitute for good model routing, batching, or quantization. It is one layer of a larger cost strategy. We describe the rest of that strategy in our 9x cost-reduction post: tier requests by difficulty, use small models for the bulk of the work, batch where latency allows, and cache aggressively. KV Cache Store handles the aggressive caching part at the attention layer; the compute it saves runs on GPU capacity you would otherwise have to over-provision.

If your workload repeatedly sends the same files or context through an LLM, kvcachestore.com is purpose-built for the problem. It is also listed as a showcase product on our products page because we believe open, composable infrastructure is the only sane way to build at scale.
